Enhancements to the Dell Product Support System.

Liaison with user departments to produce system design and program specification documents for centralisation and standardisation of warranty processing from several external systems.

Analysis and documentation of a millennium related data problem. Definition of three solution scenarios with risks and benefits quantified and recommendations made, presented to senior management for decision and sign off.

Screening of COBOL source code over four systems belonging to the Royal Bank of Canada using Micro Focus Soft Factory 2000. In total, 1.1 million lines of code screened producing 11,000 points of interest to be examined. Task completed in ten weeks.

General Support and development with a little exposure to ATLAS for various Gresham clients including Rabo Bank, Nat West Treasury, Society Generale and Royal Bank of Canada

Working on maintenance and enhancement of the Nat West ‘Bankline’ product, a PC based payment management system:

High Volume Payments project. Payment processing module replacing CHAPS participant terminals at customer site. Tasks during this project have been Change control, DDL admin. Pathway maintenance, Specification, coding and system testing.

Y2K compliance amendments. Code changes, data conversions and unit testing.

Specification, coding and system testing of new and existing code (requester/server and batch) for International Cash Manager enhancements to ‘Bankline’ allowing customers to manipulate domestic and foreign accounts held with partner Banks. Tasks have been the specification and coding of status tracking and customer set-up modules.

Migration to Client/Server architecture using GUPTA SQL Windows to develop the ‘GUI front end’ communicating with the TANDEM servers via RSC.

Analysis, design, specification and coding of new and existing functionality in sales, purchasing, distribution, marketing and stock control areas of the business.

Evaluation, installation and documenting SQA Teamtest, a Windows based regression test tool. Creation of initial test scripts and defining standards and procedures for developers to follow to gain sign off for new code additions.

Quick reports team leader. A vital tool for a fast moving business allowing sales opportunities to be directed to the right customers quickly to retain and improve market share.

Leading a team of three to provide ad hoc reports (for a user base of 400 individuals) using SQLCI and SQL Report writer. Speed, accuracy and reliability are of paramount importance. Many ‘one off’ reports have since made their way into the weekly and monthly reporting runs.

Definition and sourcing of a new UNIX based system to administer ‘Service Charges’ on leasehold properties leading to savings of £25,000 p.a. and increasing revenue by £100,000 through increased accuracy over the manual system. My involvement was to specify the user requirements and monitor the external suppliers. The product was delivered and installed on time and to budget.

Conversion of a system from a TME to a VME environment

Re writing of over 50 locally written, undocumented and unstructured extract/report/update programs. Rewriting the production SCL reducing system failures by 90%, reducing downtime by 60% and using 30% less file space

Initially seconded from the Accountancy section, the transfer was soon made permanent. I spent the year performing various coding tasks to specification across all areas of Council Business.

Creation of a manual system to administer 'Service Charges' levied on lessees by the Local Authority in accordance with 'right to buy' legislation. I was able to quickly bring a chaotic system to order enabling the authority to handle the workload efficiently and giving the ability to react quickly to legislative changes.

Much of the work here highlighted my aptitude for I.T. leading to my being seconded to the Councils I.T. department.
